WHAT'S AT HANGLETON YOUTH CENTRE?

Outdoor Education Department

The Council's Outdoor Education Department, based at Hangleton Youth Centre, offers advice and support on all aspects of learning outside the classroom to the Children's and Young People's Trust directorate, which includes 74 Infant, Junior, Primary and Secondary schools.   Outdoor Education is now universally recognised as a means of helping pupils develop their physical, leadership and team working skills in new and challenging situations.

The Duke of Edinburgh 's Award

Here, in Brighton & Hove, we take on around 700 new Duke of Edinburgh 's participants a year. Many of them come through the Open Award Centre, based here at Hangleton, where they can register for the Award independently of their school or youth group. The Award offers a programme of voluntary activities, at Bronze, Silver or Gold level, available to everyone between the ages of 14 and 25 and is split into four sections: Service , Skills , Physical and Expeditions . Involvement in the Award has been voted the leading attribute - outside of educational qualifications - that employers find attractive when recruiting new staff.

Hangleton After-School Club

Hangleton After-School Club (HASC) offers quality, affordable childcare from 3pm - 5.30pm everyday during term time. The team of qualified play workers offer a range of stimulating and exciting play opportunities for the children who attend.

Hangleton Infant and Junior schools are also planning a daily breakfast club from Autumn ‘08. This will offer a healthy and nutritional breakfast and play opportunities each day before school, enabling the school to meet the core offer in the 'extended schools' agenda by offering childcare each day through term time.

Connect Club, Youth Centre and Area Forum

A Connect Club offers a drop-in service at Hangleton Youth Centre every Friday from

12pm - 2pm.   This offers young people aged 16 to 19 the opportunity to drop by for advice and information about career choices, job vacancies, college placements and training courses.   The Connexions Personal Advisors who staff the Centre also offer help with job seekers allowance, benefits, application forms, job vacancies, interview skills and CV writing.

From September, Hangleton Youth Centre will open as a drop-in coffee bar for young people aged 13 to 19 on Wednesday and Friday evenings.    It will be a young person friendly space staffed by youth workers who can offer information on issues important to young people.

The Youth Centre is also the meeting place for the West Area Youth Forum, which enables young people to have a voice in their community and become actively involved in the development of the Youth & Connexions Service.
